In the Middle

Sitting on steps
strolling our breaks away
we stumbled over thoughts
and conversations
Bonds were formed
which our chemistry books said nothing of.
We learnt
that we see things
as we are
that no two people see the same rainbow
and by the day
the speck that was life
grows closer, bigger
as we reach for the horizon.
And suddenly ever so soon,
shoe polish, games lesssons
morning prayers, lunch breaks
Belts, ties, badges
Will be memories
swimming in nostalgia.
Next year when we watch
students climb onto the
7:30 bus, yellow and black,
we will smile a wistful smile
and wish
we were back
right here.
